Karl Lagerfeld, who died in February 2019 at 85, will be honored at the 2023 Met Gala.

Karl Lagerfeld, the legendary German fashion designer who died in February 2019 at the age of 85, will be honored at the 2023 Met Gala.

Organizers of the Met's Costume Institute fundraiser announced its topic Friday at Lagerfeld's picture studio in France for Paris Fashion Week editors.

"Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" will feature 150 of Lagerfeld's greatest ensembles spanning his six-decade career at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own label.

Andrew Bolton, the Institute's head curator, was inspired by Lagerfeld's use of sketches to communicate with his design staff.

Bolton told CNN following the news, "Every design was a drawing." "I thought the drawings were delightful, whimsical, and impressionistic.

I didn't realize they had precise details like shoulder line and sleeve length. They knew what each line or dot signified and could decipher it."

The style extravaganza is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, formally designated The Anna Wintour Costume Center. Vogue's editor-in-chief has chaired the gala since 1995.

The invite-only event invites style lovers eager to see the themed red carpet ensembles. "Celebrities, designers, and change-makers are asked to create costumes," per Vogue.

Tickets cost $30,000 each, with tables costing $275,000.

The Gala began focusing its displays on a theme in the 1970s. Previous themes include 2020's "Camp: Notes on Fashion," which featured over-the-top, goofy styles, and 2021's "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," which celebrated America's expressiveness.

The dress code for the 2022 Met Gala was golden grandeur and white tie to channel 1870 to 1890. (known as the Gilded Age New York).

Lady Gaga, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Rihanna, and Amal Clooney have been Gala co-chairs.

Lagerfeld stated he would "die on the spot" if he ever stopped working. Like his predecessor Gabrielle Chanel, he labored till the end.

He didn't take a bow at his last Paris Haute Couture show in January 2019, but he still developed the collection and delivered Fendi fall ready-to-wear instructions.

May 1 is Met Gala 2023. The exhibit runs May 5 through July 16.
